Sixth circular

Dear Participants!

This is the sixth and final circular from the Organizing Committee of the 19th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies. We are hoping that your preparations for the journey as well as the work on your conference papers are going smoothly. Below you will find some advice which you should find helpful at this stage of preparation.

• On Monday 24th August, after reaching the University main campus at Krakowskie Przedmieście 26/28, you should start with visiting the registration point in the Old Library building (Stary BUW). Signs and posters will clearly show you the way. There you will receive the bag with all the useful material such as detailed programme and the handbook with practical information on Warsaw. The book of abstracts is available online at the conference website (www.ices19.uw.edu.pl) and will not be available in print.

• Those of you who have not yet paid the conference fee through bank transfer will be able to do so with cash during the registration. The cashier will accept EUR and PLN.

• Also during the registration you will be expected to download your presentations (prepared in PowerPoint or compatible software) into the Organizers' computer. If you prefer, you may send your presentation to us directly via e-mail or make them available online for us at any date before the Conference.

• Monday 24th will be a day without academic proceedings and the registration will be open until 6 PM, on Tuesday it will also be available from 9 AM to 2 PM. Therefore, you don't need to worry if you are late for the opening. However, make sure that you contact the registration desk as soon as possible after your arrival to Warsaw

• As we have informed before, you are not obliged to hand in full papers to the organizers before the Conference.

• The Organizers in Warsaw, apart from the events in the evenings during the Conference, provide coffee breaks included in the conference fee. The lunch will be available at the reduced price for the guests of the Conference in the cafeteria in the Old Library Building (Stary BUW), the main venue of the conference. There are also a number of places to eat around the Univeristy in different price range.

HOW TO GET TO THE CONFERENCE VENUE

From the Chopin Airport:

The airport is located close to the centre of Warsaw. Bus # 175 provides a connection from the airport to the main University Gate (the name of the bus stop: Uniwersytet Warszawski). It takes circa 45 mins to get to the University.

From the Warsaw Central Railway Station:

Most international trains stop at three stations in Warsaw: Warszawa Zachodnia (Warsaw West Station), Warszawa Centralna (Central Station) and Warszawa Wschodnia (Warsaw East Station). To get to the University you need to get off at Warszawa Centralna and take a bus # 175 which will take you to main University Gate (Uniwersytet Warszawski). It takes circa 15 mins to get to the University from the Central Station.

From the Bus Station:

Most buses arrive at Młociny Metro Station. From there you need to take Metro line 1 and change at Świętokrzyska Metro Station. From there you take line 2 one stop to Nowy Świat/ Universytet Metro Station.

Taxis and public transportation:

Public transport in Warsaw is provided by buses, tramways and underground. They are all covered by the same type of tickets. You buy a ticket for a particular time span: 20, 75, 90 minutes or for an entire day. Ticket must be validated immediately after getting on the vehicle.

Taxis in Warsaw are relatively cheap, but if you want to use a taxi, make sure that you use only licensed taxi services with a tariff clearly displayed in the car window. It is always cheaper and more convenient to call a taxi by phone. The operators speak English and in most cases a taxi arrives within 10-15 minutes.

Cheap & licensed taxi services:

Volfra Taxi, tel.: 22-196-25

Bayer Taxi, tel.: 22-196-67

Glob Cab Taxi, tel.: 22-196-68

If you have further questions, please do not hestitate to write and ask. We wish you all a safe journey and we look forward to seeing you in Warsaw.

With best wishes,

The Organizing Committee in Warsaw
